It’s Either No. 1 Or Nothing: Federer

Roger Federer states that when it comes to rankings, it’s number one or nothing. In July, Federer dropped out of the top two for the first time since November 2003. His appearance in last week’s Shanghai Rolex Masters final, which he lost convincingly to Andy Murray, put him back at No. 2.

But the 16 time Grand Slam champion told the press that the jump from No. 3 to No. 2 made no difference to him. “It’s not that important to be two, three or four,” Federer said. “For me it’s either No. 1 in the world or everything else. After being No. 1 for so long it’s obviously the best feeling to be there. When you’re not ranked No. 1 in the world you obviously slog to get back there.”

Federer will make his 1st appearance at the Stockholm Open after 10 years on Thursday against American Taylor Dent. “I like to play tennis and I like to play tournaments and I haven’t been here in the past 10 years,” Federer said. “I was supposed to come here 2 years ago but I suffered from a backache.”

Being at the no. 1 spot for so long, some people may have questioned whether Federer still has the hunger to counter Rafael Nadal’s current form and dominance in World Tennis. But the Swiss maestro said he still has the drive to play and to win.

“I practice, I play matches and there’s always people cheering me on supporting me, wanting an autograph, wanting a picture,” Federer said. “That does keep me going. If you put me on the small court with no spectators, this is where I’ll struggle with my motivation.”

The other players in the top four certainly have threatened Federer’s dominance in recent times. Top-ranked Nadal has won 14 of their 23 matches, Murray has beaten him in 8 of 13 head to heads, and Federer somehow leads Djokovic 11-6 in encounters.

“Maybe in the past I had winning record streaks against everybody,” Federer said. “I remember at one stage I beat 24 top 10 players in a row back to back. Every time I played in a final, I won them and made it 24 finals in a row, so obviously you cannot keep up those kinds of streaks but I was so successful that I suppose I’m being compared to back then, which is very hard to do.”

Despite a recent loss of form, Federer said that he has been happy with the level of play this year, particularly since Wimbledon. “I definitely lost some vital matches that I could have won this year,” Federer said. “You have to fight back and try to make it not happen so often, and that’s what I’m doing and I hope I’m going to be able to turn this thing around soon.”

Hi, I’m Devesh D. Bhuwad from Mumbai. 21 years old, I have completed my BSc from Ruia College, Mumbai and intend to pursue an MBA. Currently I am in search of work as well. Writing was always my hobby since childhood wrote almost on anything but never had the brains to make a blog! And at the same time cricket was my passion. Grew up watching Sachin Tendulkar play, couldn’t be anywhere near to him though! So started writing on Cricket and at the same time other sports like Football, Tennis, Badminton and the very much hyped IPL urged me to write on them as well. And here I am, having found a perfect platform at www.thesportsmirror.com to share my articles to the world as a Freelance Content writer and in a way gain experience of contributing to a newly hosted website rather a venture which I’m sure will definitely help me in the future.
