This Could Be Sri Lanka’s Year

Everyone loves giving their opinions on cricket, from ex cricketers to teenage boys. Most are talking about how India are the most favourable to win the World Cup this year. Many however don’t agree with those statements as it could just as much be Sri Lanka’s time to shine.

With maximum focus and pressure being on India many failed to notice how dangerous the Sri Lankan side can be on any given day. They have not been heard of in the radar recently but to ignore their existence would be like living in a fool’s paradise. As good as the chances are for India’s victory it is as much for Sri Lanka as they as well have their own conditions to benefit from.

Matthew Hayden ex cricketer of Australia picks Sri Lanka as his favourites for the World Cup. He said “The top four teams are Sri Lanka, Australia, India and South Africa. But Lankans are the red-hot favourites. They have enough players to succeed in these conditions, besides some extremely experienced and dangerous players. And they are going to push hard for the World Cup,”

With a different view, Arjuna Rantunga a former Sri Lankan team captain  who lead his side to World Cup glory in 1996 said that in order to win the World Cup Sri Lanka will need to strengthen their middle order, which as per him is of great concern as it is very shaky at the moment.

His advice for the team is “Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene should not be batting at No. 3 and 4. One of them has to come down to No. 5 to bolster the middle order. Maybe they should send Chamara Kapugedera up the order to No. 4.”

This is sound advice from Ranatunga as it is unfair to put all the pressure on Angelo Matthews in the middle order and the others must also contribute towards solving this “middle order crisis”.

Sri Lanka who has been playing against West Indies in a 3 match ODI series will hopefully solve some of the problems that they have been facing with respect to their batting and bowling attack.

For them there is no time like the present to get their side in order and finally be tough competitors for that all important cup which could very easily have their name on it.
