Vijender Singh – Arafura Games 2011

Indian boxing superstar Vijender Singh last night lived up to his reputation and won comfortably against Western Australian light heavyweight boxer Jeremy van Diemen in a points decision, 18-6.

The Beijing Olympic bronze medalist said he was feeling “so great” after winning his first bout at the 2011 Arafura Games.

“The fight was not bad,” he said. “He is a good boxer.”

“I really enjoyed the fight, and I enjoyed the crowd. It was great.

“And I like being in Darwin, it’s a nice, quiet place – very peaceful.”

Indian boxing team official Harpal Juneja said the he was excited about the 25-yearold boxer’s win.

“He was amazing.

“The other one was nervous about boxing against the high profile. Vijender was not nervous at all – he’s a cool character.”

Singh received immediate congratulations for his win by the President of the Indian Boxing Association, Abhay Chautala, and the Vice President Bhupinder Singh, who rang after watching the match live on-line at www.arafuragames.nt.gov.au.

“They were very excited,” team official Juneja said.

Vijender said he was looking forward to his upcoming fights in the Games.

“I’m going to win – that’s what I came here for,” he said.

Northern Territory boxing president Boyd Scully said Singh was welcome to fight in Darwin “anytime”.

“Anytime he wants to come to Darwin he can come,” he said.

“His performance was very good. The movements around the ring were pretty fast and accurate and he knew what he was doing.

“Singh did not trade punches, he played it safe.”

Scully said Western Australian boxer Jeremy van Diemen deserved “praise”.

“The other boy did a pretty good job,” he said.
