Scott Styris – New Zealand Cricket

The all-rounder has announced his retirement from all forms of International Cricket but will continue to play domestic cricket.

Scott Styris, New Zealand all-rounder, has announced that he will no longer take part in any form of International Cricket. The all-rounder who will turn 36 next month had earlier announced his retirement from Test Cricket in 2008. However, Styris continued playing the shorter version of the game for his country and was a part of New Zealand team run in the Semi-Finals during the 2011 World Cup in India.

Styris is the 6th highest run getter for the Kiwis in ODI’s. The all-rounder scored four centuries in the 50 over format and also achieved 137 dismissals. Styris represented his country in Test cricket; playing 29 matches and scoring 5 centuries.

Styris has always played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s success over the years. He was one of the most consistent all-rounder for the Kiwis and performed on a regular basis; both with his batting and bowling abilities. . He noted winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2000, in Kenya, and scoring a hundred on Test Debut at Port of Spain, in a series that ended up being New Zealand’s first Test series victory in the West Indies, as the highlights of his career. Styris said “Winning the Champions Trophy in Kenya was awesome given it was also the first time New Zealand won an ICC event. It was also memorable to score a hundred and take wickets on my Test debut, knowing it contributed to a historic series win.”

Styris insisted that he thought about his future after the World cup and admitted that it was the time for him to call off from International Cricket as the team began a new era with some talented youngsters breaking into the side.

Styris stated his pleasure for representing his country for a long period and thoroughly enjoyed his long journey with the Black Cats. Styris said “I have thoroughly enjoyed representing my country.”It has been an honour and a pleasure to play for New Zealand alongside so many quality players over the years and to have been a part of many key moments during that time.”

Styris also mentioned that now being a non-International player, he can spend some quality time with his family. Styris stated “Not being on the international circuit means more time at home and I’m really looking forward to spending more time with my family.”

However, Styris revealed that he will continue to play domestic cricket and still enjoys the T-20 format. Styris said “I really enjoy the T20 format of the game and see it as a way to stay involved in cricket for another year or two if I can.” The all-rounder is currently playing for Essex in the Friends Life T-20 tournament in England and will play for Northern Knights in the HRV Cup in New Zealand later in the year.

The all-rounder was one of the most reliable and consistent player ever for the Kiwis and his contribution to the game of Cricket will always be remembered by every cricket fan out there.
