The Olympic pout

There are food bloggers who visit tastings, fashion bloggers who visit ramp walks, journalists who come to book signings and then there are sport bloggers who capture the most exotic moments in sport and showcase them to the rest of the sport-savvy audience.

McKayla Maroney's Olympic pout

McKayla Maroney’s Olympic pout

There are those split second moments that, when shown in slow motion, take our breath away. Their precision, detail, color and motion all blend into a mesmerizing factor and awe the audience. Then there are stills captured by the camera that are equally astounding to the eye.

A Gavin Alaoen, who is 28 years old, posted the picture of US gymnast McKayla Maroney with her famous pout. He is a digital designer in New York. Maroney won a silver for individual vault competition at the London Olympics and as soon as she went to the podium to receive her medal, she stood there with an “unsatisfied”, yet adorable pout. That pose was captured and now it has been pouting its way through several  laptops.

It was expected that Maroney would win the gold at her event and she probably would have. But a slip in the second round slipped her chances for the first position as well. And the disappointment could be seen as she went up to smile at the cameras. Except, instead of a smile, there came a pout.

Her picture is up on a Tumblr account by Alaoen. It’s titled “McKayla Is Not Impressed”. On the account are several other photos and moments that have been crafted together to show her various expressions and emotions during her performance, all of course relating back to the title. There are other pictures merged into the collage as well such as the room with the officials in the Osama Operation, a Mars picture and so on; all of those come together to give a hilarious combination of sport and entertainment.

It is not that McKayla Maroney stands clueless about the whole blast. She has seen the post, laughs on it and then says “McKayla Kinda Impressed”. The post has gotten over a thousand followers and hits ever since it went up. Alaoen says that it is up for a couple days. Next time, there will be something else catchy!

Well until then, the pout’s pouting!
