Indian shuttlers seal Canada Open

Good news comes straight from Badminton corner as, Indian shuttlers Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won the Canada Open women’s doubles title after upstaging the top-seeded Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek in the summit clash.

The third-seeded Indian pair triumphed 21-19 21-16 in the contest which lasted for a comparatively less time of just 35 minutes. In a closely contested and a neck to neck opening game, Jwala and Ashwini broke away from the 19-19 and converted the lone game point opportunity to grab the initiative.

The second game was more comfortable for the Indian pair as they opened up a 5-0 lead before going from 10-6 to 15-6 up. The top-seeded pair of Muskens and Piek, however, fought back with consecutive nine straight points to level it at 15-15.

The Indians dominated the second game and raced to a 5-0 lead before going from 10-6 to 15-6 up. However, Muskens and Piek fought back to win nine point straight and tie the game at 15-15. But Jwala and Ashwini did not let the advantage slip and won 6 of the next 7 points to clinch the title. This was Jwala and Ashwini’s first title since their reunion after the 2012 London Olympics. The journey of the duo started in 2010 when they paired up to contest for the first time at the Commonwealth Games in 2010, and they soon made history by bagging the first gold medal for India in the event, by beating a much-higher ranked Singaporean pair of Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei.

Tennis star Sania Mirza, congratulated the duo on twitter along with many other sports personalities. Ashwini, 25, and Jwala, 31, went on to create more history as they became the first Indian pair to win a medal at the Badminton World Championship in London the following year. The shuttlers won a bronze medal to beat Vita Marrisa and Nadya Melati of Indonesia. The duo reunited in October 2013 at the French Open where they lost in the first round. They also went on to win a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
