Premier League Saturday Review

There were no surprises in this week’s Barclays Premier League as the top teams like Chelsea and Liverpool both won their matches. Chelsea beat Norwich 3-1 at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool also outclassed Bolton 3-1 at Anfield.

Saturday started with an early kickoff match between Aston Villa and Wolves at the Villa Park. After a boring 1st half the game broke into life in the second half as the home side pressed for the winner. Wolves came under relentless pressure but still managed to hang on till the end. The match ended as a goalless draw. Wolves boss Mick McCarthy will be definitely happy with a point against their rivals.

On the other hand Wigan were hosting QPR at the DW stadium. Two goals from Argentinian Franco Di Santo sealed a 2-0 victory for Wigan as QPR’s new signing Joey Barton looked on from the stands.

At Liberty Stadium, Swansea hosted Sunderland with both teams looking for their 1st Premier League win. Swansea also haven’t scored in the Premier League yet and things didn’t change for them today as well. Though Scott Sinclair struck the post the final score remained 0-0.

At Stamford Bridge Chelsea and their new manager Andre Villas Boas were looking for back to back home victories. Though Chelsea weren’t at their fluent best but still they grinded a 3-1 result from the game against Norwich. Chelsea struck first blood as full back Jose Bosingwa scored a cracker. Norwich though equalized with a goal from Grant Holt. Norwich played with 10 men as their goalkeeper Ruddy was shown a red card after a challenge on Ramires. Norwich gave Chelsea a run for their money but Chelsea somehow managed any slip-ups. New signing Juan Mata justified his price tag by displaying some wonderful football and also capped his debut with a goal. Didier Drogba took a nasty blow during the match and was rushed to hospital.

The match between Blackburn and Everton was a comedy of errors. Two Blackburn players missed their penalties but Everton’s Mikel Arteta converted a penalty in second half injury time to give Everton their first win of the Premier League.

The late kickoff was between Liverpool and Bolton. Liverpool showed class as they dominated Bolton throughout the game at Anfiled. Goals from Jordan Henderson, Martin Skrtel and Charlie Adam sealed the victory for the reds. Ivan Klasnic though grabbed a consolation for Bolton and made the final scoreline read 3-1 in favor of Liverpool. This leaves Liverpool at the top of the table.
