Sania Mirza crowned No. 1 in WTA doubles rankings

It seems as if the Sania Mirza era has just begun. She is a reputed tennis player, but this is the perfect time for the 28-year-old to scale newer heights with each passing day. After clinching Miami Open a few days back, the Hyderabadi player is once again in the news for being crowned as the No. 1 in the WTA doubles rankings.

Sania is the first Indian woman to make it to the top of the doubles ranking in Lawn Tennis. Only Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have achieved such a rare feat in their golden eras during the late 1990s for India in the men’s double category.

WTA CEO Stacey Allaster showered a lot praises on the Indian tennis icon. “This achievement of Sania Mirza will inspire a lot of women tennis player aspirants in India and Asia Pacific region”, she stated. Apart from Sania Mirza, only Hsieh Su-Wei (Taiwan), Ai Sugiyama (Japan) and Peng Shuai (China) have achieved top ranking in WTA doubles from Asia.

Earlier, the top seeded Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won the Family Circle Cup against Casey Delalacqua and Darija Jurak with 6-0, 6-4 in Charleston. It is their third consecutive trophy over the last few days. Sania Mirza’s performance in the match helped her gain few necessary points to make it to the top of the points table and surpassing Sara Errani and Roberto Vinci in the WTA women’s rankings in double category.

She posted a series of tweets citing this achievement. Many celebrities including Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar conveyed his congratulatory note and best wishes on Sania’s latest accomplishment. Few hours back, the 28-year-old Tennis star posted a photo on her official social media account showing the list of top tennis women players (in doubles category) as per the latest WTA rankings.

The top-seeded Indian will not have much time to celebrate the achievement back home. She will be leading India’s Fed Cup side in the Asia-Oceania tie (Group II) to be played from April 14-18 in her home town – Hyderabad.

Sania is an excellent player in Singles category too, but after her wrist injury in 2012 she decided to fully concentrate on doubles matches. She reached on to 27th spot in the WTA singles rankings. However, Sania’s teaming up with Martina Hingis is hugely successful. The duo is still invincible and has not been defeated yet.

The ace Lawn Tennis player is overtly exulted at her recent success and admitted that she has dreamt to be No. 1 player during her childhood. Nonetheless, she is also honored to reach the top-spot in the WTA rankings. In fact, it’s a dream come true for the Hyderabadi sportswoman.
