IPL 2015: Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad, qualified for playoffs

Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 9 wickets in an almost one-sided manner at the last IPL league match in Hyderabad. With this victory, Mumbai advanced to playoffs. SRH decided to bat first in front of its home crowd after winning the toss, but their batting order completely collapsed today.

Confident MI bowlers didn’t give much opportunity to SRH openers Dhawan and Warner. Malinga gave the breakthrough in the very first over by dismissing Shikhar Dhawan bowled out for just 1. SRH skipper David Warner (6) also got out in the second over by giving a top edge to Pollard off McClenaghan.

SRH came under pressure on losing the first two wickets in first two overs of the match. Morgan and Henriques tried to rotate the strike but their partnership didn’t continue for long. McClenghan again picked up the wicket of Morgan (9) through caught out at the hands of Simmon on point. Hyderabad’s middle order didn’t click either.

The Slow-left-arm bowler Suchith surprised Hyderabad by picking up two important wickets of Henriques (11) and Naman Ojha (0) in his single over. Then Harbhajan Singh bowled out Lokesh Rahul for 25, as the team’s scoreboard was reduced to 61/6 at the 13th over. Glorious shots from Dale Steyn 19 (11b, 4s x 3) in the end helped teams’s score cross 100-run mark. After 20-overs SRH managed 113 only on the scoreboard.

Considering the depth of MI’s strong batting line-up, the outcome of the match was almost imminent. Parthiv Patel and Lendl Simmons opened up the inning for Mumbai Indians. They started off with a cautious yet steady start to ensure that Hyderabad would not get any chance to make a comeback in the match.

Soon both the openers got set and started hitting boundaries at their ease. Parthiv Patel 51* (37b, 4s x 9) and Lendl Simmons 48 (44b, 4s x 4, 6s x 2) made 106-run partnership for the 1st wicket at just 13.2 overs. This partnership was big enough to bring the match completely under Mumbai’s control.

Simmons failed to complete his half century as he was caught by Dhawan off K. Sharma. Now Mumbai needed just 8 runs to win from almost 37 balls. Without wasting any moment skipper Rohit Sharma hit a big six in the very first delivery that he faced. He followed it with a single and then Parthiv scored the winning single and Mumbai Indians began its celebration. The first qualifier will be played in Mumbai between CSK and MI on May 19.
