The Serbian won 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (10-12), 6-4, 6-3 to deny Roger Federer the opportunity to become the first man to win the Wimbledon eight times. Novak Djokovic has overtaken the greats of tennis like Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl in terms of major wins. Novak Djokovic has now equalled his coach Boris Becker by winning three Wimbledon titles and now he is just one of five ever to have 3 or more Wimbledon titles under his belt.

Djokovic after his win was very excited, “I have to say it’s a big challenge against Roger. A lot of players of my generation have looked up to him and followed his lead”. He added, “He makes you push your limits, work hard and win every point”.

A dejected Federer however said, “I had my chances in the first set. I got lucky to win the second, had chances in the third. But he was better on the bigger points. He was rock solid. I didn’t play badly myself. That’s how it goes”.

The game was one of the closely contested ones however Federer looked out of sorts somewhat. Roger entered the courts with the hope to overturn his last year’s defeat by Djokovic. Federer broke early with a break point win but failed to capitalise on the set. The sheer mental toughness of Djokovic brought him back into the game as Federer made numerous unforced errors.

Novak Djokovic was in the driving seat throughout the game as Federer was trying to play catch-up. Djokovic was extremely animated in his usual way to as he won and lost points. He at a point in the game, frustrated, smacked his racquet into his foot and shook his head as both players headed for a pause in the game.

Rain delayed the proceedings of the match and disrupted the rhythm of Novak. The roof was not required as the rain passed away in 15 minutes. There were tense times when Djokovic returned from 0-30 to take the set. In the end, it was a display of pure aggression and match control by the Serb who humbled Roger Federer in front of his most loyal crowd. This is only the third time Roger lost in ten appearances at the Wimbledon.

Djokovic repeated the tradition of eating grass off the court after his win which he started last year.
