Hockey India: The Hunt For A Kabir Khan

Indian Hockey

The Indian Hockey is still perplexed with regard of having a new coach. Several questions boggle in my mind like ‘Why search when there are men to train in our soil? Are the white-skinned trainers more capable?

The man who began the concept of having a foreign coach, KPS Gill agreed sometime early this month that it was a gross decision that I had made. There were complaints coming from the foreign coaches repeatedly to the Hockey India on different issues like the pay, the administration and other things that are remotely related with them. This was more like a hitch for the men at the receiving end. Complexities grew day by day causing lot of thoughts. With the resignation of Harendra Singh the National Hockey Squad was orphaned.

Dhanraj Pillay, former Captain Indian Hockey was backed by many other senior players for the post of Indian Hockey coach which looks sensible also as most of the statements were that foreign coaches were highly interfering in other issues if it had been an Indian coach who is well aware of the intrinsic network of the Hockey India and the intertwined politics in it he will be able to handle it rather than putting a person from other man’s land in this place.

The trend of flying a coach overseas began with the entry of Gerhard Peter Rach in 2004 which encountered futile results and poor performance. Then came the dynamic profiled Ric Charlesworth which saw zero-worth results again and the mountain of complaints from him added to the nemesis.

Spanish coach Jose Brasa’s tenure ended recently and there is no talk of extending it. Poor squad is like a lost child in a fair!

It is like inviting trouble from others land and India is no short of world-class players. We can very well rely on Indians as they would not leave the team in a lurch as how Ric did because of inherent duty consciousness and the love for the home team.

They are also waiting for a hearing which has been constantly procrastinated due to myriad issues like Raja scam, Adarsh scam and the Kalmadi scam. The decision has to be unanimous from the Ministry of Sports, Indian Hockey Federation, Hockey India and Indian Olympic Association which is least likely to happen, still like building castles in air let us hope for a man from our soil to take this duty.
