Indian Sports Roundup Year 2010 – A Bliss For Many

Indian Sports Roundup Year 2010

Indian Sports Roundup Year 2010

A pick of major events throughout the year at its end is common; this year would mostly create turbulence at the center as it was full of scams.

This post is not for the giants in sports it is for the first-time achievers.

Aspiring kids would tell “I want to become like Sachin Tendulkar in cricket or Vishwanantan Anand in chess”. Gone are those days; it is time for new sports in India.

Nation’s supermom, Mary Kom got her title in 2010 after the birth of her twins. Being a boxer is something ‘not common’ in Indian women but nothing actually thwarted to her goal. Overcoming hardships, the twins were like the pillars to her house of glory and not a hurdle.

Thanks to Rathore for giving a new dimension to the shooting in India, his silver in Athens made remarkable changes in the sport. Then followed Abhinav Bindra.

Success came in the way of Gagan Narang, proving that he is no longer Bindra’s dogsbody. The real hero showed his mettle in the Commonwealth Games and Munich. He aims for Olympic Gold; let us see what is in store for Gagan this 2011.

We should not forget to mention Tejeswini Sawant, who was a struggling new-comer in the beginning. She almost went unrecognized until she made a place for herself with gold at Munich.

Other achievers who belong to the real India (rural India) dived in to fetch the medal but were not into that much of media coverage. This would probably include Sudha Singh who won gold in athletics at the Asian Games, Anisa Sayyed and Rahi Sarnobat for their gold in CWG. It is not hard at all to pick up names of such players but it will make the post very factual. The vital thing that has to recognized is that every medal, no matter gold or silver or bronze matters. To put a tally at the end they count the medals but forget their owners. It hurts more when the talent is forgotten or unnoticed.

Now comes the easy part, the evergreen achievers. Sachin to Saina, Bindra to Bambri, Sushil to Sommadev and many others who have earned a name and fame for them have not failed in 2010 by sustaining it. They don’t maintain the record but break it!

Scaling new records, touching great heights, getting into problems and typical controversies, the guts to host CWG along with few odds like Kalmadi thanking the non-existing Diana and later on IT raiding many officials were part of the game.

What in 2011?

Sachin breaking his own record? Hockey team getting an Indian and compatible coach? The racket queens Saina and Sania to build a new room to keep their trophies?

The best would be India hosting another International Sports meet, but without a roof this time!
