The match of the tournament so far was played under the closed roof of the Centre Court, with 40 year old Kimiko Date-Krumm taking on Venus Williams. The Japanese woman enthralled the crowds with her serve and volley style running to a 5-1 lead. But Venus battled back to 6-5 before Kimiko closed out the set in the tie break. A high paced match with blistering hitting ended with the American triumphing 8-6 in the final set. Top seed Rafael Nadal and local favourite Andy Murray had no problem dispatching their opponents while Petra Kvitova and Vera Zvonereva also waltzed through their matches. Canadian and 31st seed Milos Raonic was the first seeded casualty of the day, when he retired due to injury.13th seed Agneska Radwanska ran through her opponent without dropping a game, while 2007 semi finalist Zheng Jie, also looked in no trouble whatsoever.  The impressive Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, conqueror of Jelena Jankovic, went through to the third round with a straight sets victory over Monica Nicolescu while the major upset of the day saw 21st seed Fernando Verdasco crash out to Dutchman Robin Haase, only to be upstaged by an even bigger upset, that of 14th seed Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka. There are still some backlogs due to rain and the men’s doubles event couldn’t get underway on Wednesday.

On to Day 4 then, and what is a potential banana skin for 5th seed Robin Soderling. He is up against 2003 champion, Lleyton Hewitt, but current form favours the Swede. Also, in Centre Court action will be 6 time champion Roger Federer and French Open champion Na Li. Novak Djokovic will open proceedings on Court No 1, while also in second round action will be 2004 champion Maria Sharapova and No 1 seed Caroline Wozniaki. The Indian challenge will come in the form of Somdev dev Varman as he faces a tough opponent in 18th seed Mikhail Youzhny. Sania Mirza will open her doubles campaign as will the Indo-Pak pair of Bopanna and Qureshi and the Indian express Paes and Bhupathi.

The action is hotting up on the grass of the All England Club. It is going to get more intense as the days go on with some breathtaking tennis on display. This is the World’s premier tennis tournament.
