Liverpool FC – New Owners, New Lease Of Life?

Liverpool FC

It has been only seven games into the season but Liverpool’s season keeps going from bad to worse with every passing game. Languishing in the relegation zone at 18th place with only one win in the league, Liverpool’s board of directors have, today, announced the sale of the club to New England Sports Venture (NESV), which is also the parent company of Boston Red Sox from the Major League Baseball.

At the start of the season Liverpool would have been looking to put behind last season’s disappointment as they secured the managerial services of Roy Hodgson. He started off in promising fashion as he snapped up Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole and then persuaded the duo of Torres and Gerrard to stay.

But once the ball started rolling and the season kicked off, it has been a downward spiral for the new manager. After starting brightly in the opening fixture against Arsenal, Joe Cole managed to be sent off before half time in his first game in the Red jersey. Then came the Mascherano saga. The Argentinean midfielder insisted that he was unhappy at Anfield and Liverpool were forced to sell him to Barcelona. Back on the field, Liverpool was thrashed 3-0 by big spenders Manchester City. They managed an unconvincing win against West Brom but were held to a goalless draw by Birmingham the following week.

Liverpool probably played their best football of the season against rivals Manchester United but they were undone by the brilliance of Berbatov as they slumped to a 3-2 defeat.

Liverpool would have liked to put their season back on track when they took on second division side Northampton in the Carling Cup at Anfield. But disaster struck and Liverpool crashed out on penalties. They were further held to a 2-2 draw by Sunderland in the Premier League and then a 0-0 draw against Utrecht in the Europa League. Just as you thought their season couldn’t get any worse, they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Blackpool at home.

Nothing seems to have gone right for Liverpool since the start of this season. New signings Christian Poulsen, Konchesky and Raul Merieles have failed to make an impression so far. Goalkeeper Reina’s form has been woeful and the defence has looked out of sorts. The Anfield faithful have become impatient and have already started calling for Hodgson to be sacked and booing the players off the field after their match against Blackpool.

However Hodgson firmly believes that Liverpool can win the Europa League this season and it remains to be seen if the sale of the club to NESV is the silver lining that turns Liverpool’s fortunes around and gets the crowd back behind the players and put them back to where they belong – in the top 4!
