India kicked off the fourth day of competition in the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Ace shooters Vijay Kumar and Gurpreet Singh clutched gold on the fourth day of the XIX Commonwealth Games in 25 Meter Rapid Fire Pistol (Men) here today.

The Indian duo scored 1162 points to set a new Commonwealth Games record. Malaysia won the silver, while Australia bagged the bronze in the event.

Australia bagged their first shooting gold medal in the ongoing Games with Alethes Sedgman ensuring a top podium finish in the women’s 50 meters rifle three position event.

Kumar and Singh broke the Games record (1,134), by a colossal margin, also set by India at the Melbourne Games four years ago. Kumar (587) and Singh (575) shot a total of 1,162 to win the gold ahead of Malaysia and Australia. The record was held by Kumar and Pemba Tamang.

Malaysian duo Hasli Izwan Hasan Amir (576) and Hafiz Adzha (568) shot a cumulative 1,144. Australia’s Bruce Quick (563) and David Chapman (562) struck 1,125.

Tennis results didn’t dishearten either and were on the anticipated lines. Top seeded Somdev Devvarman beat sixth seed Rubin Statham of New Zealand 6-3, 6-4 and raced into the men’s singles semifinal. In women’s singles, Sania Mirza moved into the semis as well. She hammered eighth seeded New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-3.

India also moved into the semi-final of the badminton mixed team event, blanking Canada 3-0. On the badminton courts, Jwala Gutta and V.Diju beat Grace Gao and NG Toby 21-8, 21-12; Chetan Anand brushed aside David Snider 21-18, 21-17; and Saina Nehwal reced past Anna Rice 21-16, 21-13 to book a semifinal spot in the mixed team event.

Athletes won the first shooting gold for Australia while Singapore duo Xiang Wei Jasmine and Aquilah Sudhir took the silver and bronze respectively.

There was, however, bad news for the hosts in the women’s 50 meters rifle three position event, as world champion Tejaswini Sawant failed to qualify for the finals while her compatriot Lajja Gauswami finished sixth.
