Dhoni fined heavily for slow over rate

Dhoni fined heavily for slow over rateafter India ended three overs short of their target.

According to the revamped rules of ICC, the team should be fined 10% of the match fee and the captain should be fined 20% of the match fee for every over the team fails to bowl. According to his rule Dhoni stands to lose a large amount of his match fee now. The rule further states that if the team repeats the above offence in the same format of the game within a 12month period the captain will be suspended for the next match in that format.

Dhoni had already been fined for slow over rate once earlier this year in the Cape Town Test against South Africa in January. This will be his second offence and it would mean that if Dhoni is fined again for slow over in any test before January 2012 will lead to his suspension in the next test match played by India.

It seems that Indian team has accepted the offence and has not appealed against it. This could have been taken as a minor offence which would not have resulted in such penalties for the team India and its captain.

The next focus will be on the England tour where Dhoni needs to be careful with the over rate. It may prove dangerous for Indian team if Dhoni is suspended with another slow over rate offence.
