The competition took place on Sunday where the record of Grant Hackett’s 1500 meters world record was broken by Sun. He trailed Hackett’s timings till now by two seconds, in a record which had long been standing unbroken and after 10 years Sun managed to replace his name into the record.  The teenager cruised through the waters in the last 50 meters of the race with the Shanghai crowd cheering in all high spirits.

Sun finished the 1500 meters race in 14 minutes and 34.14 seconds where Ryan Cochrane finished second and Gergo Kis finished third with timings of 14.44.46, 14.45.66 respectively.

Sun had already won gold for the 800 meter race, silver for the 400 meters and a bronze for 4×200 meters race earlier in the tournament. He was the second to break a world record in the championship. Before, it was Lochte who broke his own record for the 200m individual medley.

After the victorious win and the world record title, Sun told reporters that all the training and the hard work he put in had finally paid off. He also said that he did not put in too much thought to the world record prior to the race. He wanted to focus on the race and only that. But now there are two things that have made a splash.

Lochte, on the other hand, won five golds in the tournament: 400m individual medley, 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle, 200 backstroke and the 4×200 freestyle. He also got the male swimmer of the tournament title. The female swimmer of the tournament went to Rebecca Soni. She won 3 golds and a bronze. She was content with the results and showed all the excitement she had at the finale.

Michael Phelps, coming back into form in this tournament won four golds, two silvers and a bronze medal. He said that after he won 8 golds at the Beijing Olympics, he had gone out of form due to a lack of training but will work harder to get back into shape as its already time for another Olympics championships.

All of the winners are expected to show even better performances for the upcoming Olympics and they have to as nothing be more prestigious than winning at the most awaited championships of the world.
