This is the Italians’ biggest world cup win, after running in nine tries on Tuesday. They were certainly on fire during the game as they scored four tries along with a bonus in just under 22 minutes setting Trafalgar Park up in flames as well. Flanker Sergio Parisse scored the first try after a light brush against Giulio Toniolatti, making it his first try on an international level.

They continued to put mounting pressure on the Russians with a full-fledged attacking system that worked to their benefit. They were given a penalty try after Russia was penalized after the 28th minute. The game was only getting better.

Russia tried to fight back and score a couple tries however the successes were favored to the Italians. Alexander Yanyushkin from the Russian side did however made history for their side as he scored a try in the quadrennial tournament. However this wasn’t enough to give the team the kick they needed as they were left behind by the attacking opponents.

Much of the action happened during the first half where the scores kept mounting and the score-difference kept on increasing. During the second half, Nikolay Nerush of Russia tried to get their side of the score higher and he did manage to do so however not in pace of Benvenuti, who had the score reading 43-7 after 47 minutes of the game.

There were also Vladimir Ostrushko and center Alexey Makovetskiy who scored a few tries for Russia. Their game was commendably strong the second half however by that time, they were far too behind.

It indeed was as superb performance by the Italians as they had earlier lost their opening match against Australia and knew that they needed a bonus try to be able to qualify for the quarterfinals. That was exactly what the first half gave them.

Italy now keeps their quarterfinals hope afloat with this historic win and if they do, it would be their first. They play the US in the next match on September 27.

For now Russia is at the bottom of Pool C with their next match against Ireland in Rotorua on Sunday.
