21 Not Out (Part 1): The Curious Case Of Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar

“We are only as old as we think we are!” How true is this? There have been several didactic theories propounded to teach us science but one man has calmly chosen to disregard all those. He has defied them all. The earth rotation around the sun for the past 22 years hasn’t prevented him from staying frozen at 16. And that is why this man, who is considers himself as one of the earnest servants of the game has enshrined the hearts of cricket lovers and is being worshiped across geographies.

22 years! The journey has been pretty long for someone who has started his career so early. As it appears it is not just doing what you love, but it meant you have to stay away from your parents right from the age of 13-14 playing cricket until the body completely gets exhausted. It also meant he has remained ascetic, resisting to the temptation of living a youth life. His enormous love for the game made him widen his repertoire and showcase his ‘unique selling proportion’ at the ‘opportunity cost’ of a mediocre-youth life.

He is still furthering his footsteps into the territories he alone has access too. Yet, he is a child by mind still wanting to explore new avenues, learning new tricks adapting to formats that never existed when he was young. There have been too many occasions for him where he could have been a touch complacent, had he been obsessed with personal achievements and milestones. While many of his own peers have fallen in love with the rewards and incentives, this man has treated the game like a musician does, while singing the alapana of his favorite raaga, decorating it and making it to look more and more beautiful. That love of his has indeed created an insurmountable gap between him and other legends of the game.

Science says he turns 38! Over his career he has made English run short of adjectives when it comes to describing his genius, yet he is continuing to display a youthful exuberance and is playing like a child who wishes it wouldn’t get dark. He has climbed to dizzy heights that others cannot even spot but has still managed to keep his feet on the ground. What a paradox! He is none other than the nation’s proudest possession “Sachin Tendulkar”.

Author:

Hi Folks! This is Gautham from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. I'm 20 and doing my final year in Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar College of Engineering. I'm a self confessed Cricket lover and I have a great fervor towards writing about the game. In the generations I've come across, I've loved watching Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid bat. Besides writing, I have great interest in singing and I'm a great fan of Hariharan and A.R.Rahman sir. I would like to be remembered as one of the greatest sports journalists who changed the way their profession is perceived. I set myself performance goals and believe in giving a hundred percent in whatever I do. I thank God for giving me an opportunity to work with sports mirror so early in my career. I also thank my friends who made me believe in what I do and gave honest comments about my writing. God is great :)
