Manchester United Transfers Part I: On Their Way?

Wesley Sneijder

The transfer season is nearly upon us and Manchester United will no doubt be looking to spend a fair amount in the transfer market this summer as the Glazers try to ease the backlash against their horrendous loans as well strengthen the squad with fresh replacements for the aging and retiring stars. The United supporters will definitely have something to look forward to with Sir Alex himself quoted as saying two or three deals should materialise. With Real Madrid already having made one of the sweetest deals of the summer bagging Nuri Sahin at the price they have, Sir Alex will be looking to make good use of his transfer kitty as well. Let us look at the more likely transfer prospects on their way in to Old Trafford.

David de Gea

Current Club: Atletico Madrid

Valuation: £16m

Position: GK

The 20 year old keeper has made the number one jersey his at Atletico Madrid with consistent glowing performances including a couple of fine penalty saves in the La Liga this year. According to latest reports, has delayed his decisions for the future till June 30th. Has emerged as Sir Alex’s first choice ahead of the Maarten Stekelenburg and with Edwin Van der Sar set to retire, will be a priority buy for the Red Devils. Is in line with Ferguson’s recent trend of buying young prospects and would be a great long term signing.

Wesley Sneijder

Current Club: Inter Milan

Valuation: £30m

Position: Central/Wide Midfield

The Dutch midfield maestro was instrumental in Inter’s success past season and also played a big hand in Holland’s charge to the world cup finals. However, this season has been somewhat of a let-down and with Inter Milan looking to rebuild, will be available. United have been flirting with him for the past couple of seasons and with Scholes set to retire will be the perfect reinforcement from midfield. Also loves to play the diagonal system which United often employ.

Jordan Henderson

Current Club: Sunderland

Valuation: £10m + Danny Welbeck

Position: Central Midfield

Midfield is certainly one region that United will be looking to fortify and one name that keeps popping up is that of 20 year old Henderson. He has said that he is happy at Sunderland but with Steve Bruce looking to assure himself a proven forward to replace Darren Bent, might well be shipped off to Old Trafford in a cash plus swap deal. Is an attacking midfielder and would relish being relieved of the holding midfield position that he has been forced to play with.

Jack Rodwell

Current Club: Everton

Valuation: £20m

Position: Central/Defensive Midfield

Another exciting young prospect coming through the Everton Academy, has been heavily linked with United thanks to Carrick not quite being consistent and perhaps as a partner to Fletcher’s style of play. Makes driving forward runs leading to goals and can pass the ball as well. With the camaraderie between David Moyes and Sir Alex, could well be on his way to United.

Maarten Stekelenburg

Current Club: Ajax

Valuation: £10m

Position: GK

Is a top class goalkeeper with a calming influence and will certainly have the recommendation of Van der Sar. Having kept 16 clean sheets in 36 league appearances this year has certainly made a case for himself to be made the Old Trafford number one. United’s keeping coach, Rene Meulensteen is said to favour him.

Ashley Young

Current Club: Aston Villa

Valuation: £25m

Position: Wide Midfield

With 8 goals and 10 assists for a club that is languishing in the lower half of the table; Young has certainly proven himself in a tough Premier League season and could very well reap the rewards with a move to Old Trafford on the cards. However, Valencia’s return to form has slightly sobered United’s interest in him but Nani’s patchy form should still see United try to land the Villain midfielder this summer.

Charlie Adam

Current Club: Blackpool

Valuation: £10m

Position: Central Midfield

No doubt one of the players of the season, Charlie Adam will definitely be sought after by several clubs. But when Sir Alex Ferguson calling, this fellow Scotsman could find it difficult to refuse. Has the ability to battle it out in midfield and can find a pass in any range at will. Also has an eye for goal and will be a great addition to the Old Trafford ranks.
