She had already advanced on to the second round and was due to face Samantha Stosur but will not be playing the Western and Southern Open anymore.

Serena had been out of play for almost a year due to various injuries but had returned last month making a profound comeback. She had been cruising through all her matches so far and had set her eyes on the Cincinnati Event’s title however looks like she will need to wait for this one in another year.

She was extremely disappointed after making the withdrawal but also said that she wouldn’t neglect her injuries like last time. It was her sister Venus Williams that pushed Serena to take a break and recover last year. This time Serena didn’t want to take any chances and especially as the US Open is set to come. All the players both out and still playing in the Cincinnati are looking forward to the US Open.

The withdrawal of Serena Williams may come as a relief to the players that still remain contenders for the title as Serena had been outperforming herself ever since her comeback and in this event as well and also as she won the Toronto Cup just last week. She was on a 12-match winning spree. Her opponent in the finals of the Toronto Cup was also Stosur.

She said to reporters that it may have been due to her excessive practicing and matched ever since she made a comeback that the injury hit her. She did not think it would have been smart to take such a huge risk especially when the US Open is later this month.

“I don’t think this is a good time for me to take a big chance. I just don’t think that’s smart. I’m definitely disappointed, but at the same time I have a lot to look forward to.”

She also said that it was a matter of a week and she will be back to win many more matches. For now, Serena said “life goes on”.

For now, Li Na will be facing Samantha Stosur in the next round.

Stosur may not have the easier road after all as she is set to face the first Asian to have won the French Open. Game’s still on!
