DAY 11: World University Games 2015




Korea continued their good form in the Gwangju Universiade as their tally of golds swell to 43 at the end of 11 days of games on Sunday.

With this Korea consolidated their lead in the overall medal table at World University Games Gwangju. With 43 golds 28 silver and 26 bronze, they finished at the top of the table. On Sunday, Korea added 8 golds to their medal haul taking the final tally of golds to 43. In badminton they clinched 5 golds followed by one each in tennis, taekwondo and rhythmic gymnastics.

There was no change in the table rankings for Russia and China, as both were placed at 2nd and 3rd spots respectively. Both the nations added 3 golds to their medal haul swelling it to 32. By virtue of their silver medal count (44 to China’s 15) Russia got the second place in the medal table.  Both Russia and China are 11 golds behind Korea, with just two days of action remaining.

The total medal count for top five Nations stands as follows.

Korea (43 gold 28 silver 26 bronze), Russia (32 gold 37 silver 44 bronze) China (32 gold 19 silver 15 bronze) Japan  (24  gold 23 silver 34 bronze) and USA (18 gold 15 silver 18 bronze).

There was no increase seen in the Indian medal count as they found them at 32th spot in the table with the total of 5 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze) at the end of days play.  So far 64 countries have won at least one medal.  Finland and Argentina opened their accounts by winning one bronze each. Kyrgyzstan with one bronze medal settled at base of the table.

The 2015 Summer Universiade, which marks the 28th edition of the sports event, opened in the city of Gwangju on July 3, and will run until July 14. The World University Games are organised by International University Sports Federation (FISU) which is open to athletes between the ages of 17 to 28. Around 13000 athletes from 144 countries are competing for 272 gold medals in 21 sports at 38 venues.

These games are being telecast live by DD Sports for the first time in India. The 12 days sports extravaganza event will end on 14th of July.  You can also catch all the updates of the games on DD Sports social networking sites.
