Wimbledon 2015: Sania Mirza-Martina Hingis win women’s doubles final




Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza defeated the strong combination of Russian pair Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesina. The Swiss-Indian pair won the match which started on Centre Court in bright sunshine and finished under floodlight, 5-7, 7-6, 7-5.

Wimbledon 2015: Sania Mirza-Martina Hingis win women’s doubles final

Martina Hingis waited almost 17 years to add another title to her tally of Wimbledon wins. Hingis said, “It feels like it was in another life”. Talking about her previous titles, she said, “But 17 years, usually your lucky to win it once or happy to be out here and play on the Wimbledon grounds. Its above my expectations”.

Martina, 34 years of age after now, won her first Wimbledon title at the tender age of 15. She quit the sport in 2003 due to an ankle injury but returned to play in 2008. In 2007 she served a two year ban after she was tested positive for cocaine at the Wimbledon that year.

Martina after her win said, “It is no longer a spring chicken”, signifying that she had become a doubles specialist when she returned to the sport in 2013. She added, “I had one comeback when I came back in singles, now another one in doubles”.

Sania Mirza had her own reasons to celebrate as she created history to become the first Indian woman to win a grand slam event. After the win she said, “It means everything to be here today. To come out at Wimbledon Centre Court and have the whole crowd behind you is pretty incredible”. Talking about an Indian creating history, she said, “But for me, as an Indian, I’m in Little India here. There are so many Indians in England. Thankfully there are a lot of us everywhere but in England especially I have always has amazing support”.

This was Sania’s first appearance alongside Martina at a major doubles final. The pair played an amazing game to clinch the title from the formidable Russian pair. Martina and Sania lost their first set however fought back in the second set in the tie break. In the third set they again made a remarkable comeback from 5-2 down to take the set and the title.
